How an AI Translates

An AI can translate a text from one language into another. That belongs to language AI. Experts call it NLP for short.

That lets people understand each other across languages. You can reach texts in foreign languages. And it helps you when you learn a language.

How an AI translates

  1. Word order

The AI knows the words and the word order. It knows them in both languages.

  2. Neural networks

Modern systems use neural networks. That way they catch the meaning, not just single words.

  3. Learning

The AI learns from millions of translated texts. That is how it spots how the languages fit together.

  4. Still hard

Sayings are hard. Hints from one country are hard too. And so are words with more than one meaning.

Soon you will translate texts yourself. Then you compare your translation with the AI's.

Guess first, then experiment

Translate the German saying "Es regnet Bindfäden" word for word. You get "It rains strings". Does an English child understand that?
