Half Hidden

In object recognition an AI finds things in a picture. It also says where exactly they are.

Step 1 of 4

What you'll learn in this level

  • Why some things are easier to spot than others
  • What occlusion means for an AI
  • Why an AI sees differently than you do

What the AI Finds in a Picture

In object recognition an AI finds things in a picture. It also says where exactly they are.

This sits in self-driving cars. Also in cameras that watch over places. And in phone apps that add things to the picture.

How Object Recognition Works

  1. Find features

The AI looks for certain patterns, shapes, colours and surfaces. That is how it tells things apart.

  2. Neural networks

A neural network is a computer model that learns. It practises on millions of labelled pictures. After that it knows thousands of kinds of things.

  3. Confidence numbers

For every find the AI says how sure it is. That number is called a confidence value.

  4. The hard part

It gets hard when things are half hidden. Or when they lie in a strange way. Or when the light is bad.

Here you find out how an AI spots things in very different scenes.

Guess first, then experiment

A cup stands half behind a book. You spot it at once. And the AI?
